Belasteguin, Lima and Salazar, Marrero triumph at Keler Euskadi

The world number ones in the men’s and women’s categories proved exactly why they are placed at the summit as they triumphed in the finals of the Keler Euskadi Open that concluded late on Sunday.

Fernando Belasteguin and Pablo Lima powered their way to an amazing 12th title on the World Padel Tour (WPT) in 2016, while Alejandra Salazar and Marta Marrero Marrero continued with their run in the women’s side with the top honours.

Belasteguin and Lima had absolutely no problems while getting past world number twos Francisco Navarro Compan and Carlos Daniel Gutierrez 6-2, 6-4, while Salazar and Marrero showed that they are easily capable of handling any threat thrown at them with an emphatic 6-3, 6-2 win over former world number ones Maria Jose Sanchez Alayeto and Maria Pilar Sanchez Alayeto.

Earlier in the quarter-finals, Belasteguin and Lima had received a walkover from the injured Uri Botello and Federico Quiles, before fighting their way to a three-set 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over world number fives, Maximiliano Sanchez and Matias Diaz.

Navarro and Gutierrez, the world number twos had got the better of Juan Mieres and Miguel Lamperti 6-2, 6-3 to set a meeting in the final against the world number ones who have been on a roll this year as well.

The women’s competition too went as per plan, except for the shock defeat of world number fives Elisabeth Amatriain and Patricia Llaguno as they crashed to a 6-4, 6-4 defeat against unheralded Alba Galan and Maria Del Carmen Villalba.

However, in the semi-finals Galan and Villalba could not sustain their form as they went down in straight sets against the Sanchez Alayeto twins 6-2, 6-3, while Salazar and Marrero eased into yet another final at the cost of a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cecilia Reiter and Carolina Navarro.

Held at the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastian, this was the penultimate tournament on the WPT calendar this season. The next stop for the players will be the season finale - the Estrella Damm Master Final - to be held in Madrid from December 14 to 18.

Hosted by IFEMA, the season finale sees the best eight pairings from throughout the season converge in Madrid to decide the champion of champions before the WPT takes a well-deserved break. Tickets have already gone on sale and are selling at a quick pace.
