Dubai Padel Master gets four-star rating

The Dubai Padel Master has got a seal of approval after being accorded with a four-star status at the second edition of the Sports Events Ranking System (SERS) of the Dubai Sports Council (DSC).

The Dubai Padel Master was the first-ever professional padel tournament in the Middle East region, organized by the World Padel Tour (WPT) in coordination with the UAE Padel Association (UAE PA) and Nad Al Sheba (NAS) Sports Complex, from October 25-31, 2015.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, the week-long tournament witnessed some of the best professional players battle for titles in the men’s and women’s categories.

The twin pairing of Maria Pilar Sanchez Alayeto and Maria Jose Sanchez Alayeto secured the women’s crown with a straight sets win over Alejandra Salazar and Marta Marrero Marrero, while world number ones Fernando Belasteguin and Pablo Lima defeated Juani Mieres and Sanyo Gutierrez for the men’s title.

The origins of padel can be traced to the huge amount of support and personal attention given to the sport by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan. It was under the directives of Sheikh Hamdan that the sport of Padel really sprouted and started getting recognition from a majority of the tennis fraternity already existing in the UAE.

But it was on June 9, 2014 that marked a special date for padel in the UAE as it was on this day that Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development issued a decree officially recognising padel as a sport with full government support. As per the decree, Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum was entrusted with the reins of being the first President of UAE Padel Association with assistance of six members constitute the Board of Directors.

The first meeting of the new Board of Directors of the UAE Padel Association was held on July 11, 2014 and it was during this meeting that roles were assigned among the members. Khalifa Yousuf Al Khoory became the first Vice President, Mohammed Mubarak Al Mutaiwe’e was chosen as the second Vice President and Saeed Al Marri as the Secretary General of the new association.
“The four-star rating is a huge boost for us at the UAE Padel Association,” Mohammad Al Mutaiwe’e said after receiving the award.

“This is a definite indicator that we are on the right track in pushing this sport forward. Our task now is to continue attracting youngsters so that the sport grows at the community level,” he added.
